Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina is one of the top tourist destinations in the United States. The city is filled with rich history, unique culture and a diverse list of activities to take in. Below you will find some excursions Tiffany and Nathan recommend you experience during your time in Charleston.

International African American Museum

This museum, which opened just a few months ago, is showcases the stories images and artifacts of Black people in America. It is located on the site where Gadsden's Wharf, the disembarkation point of up to 40 percent of all American enslaved persons, once stood.

The Museum is open 10AM to 5PM, Tuesday through Sunday.

Moja Arts Festival

The MOJA Arts Festival is a celebration of African-American and Caribbean Arts. Selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events for many years, the MOJA Arts Festival promises an exciting line-up of events with a rich variety of traditional favorites. Nearly half of the events are admission-free, and the remainder are offered at modest ticket prices.

The festival will take place from Sept. 28 to October 8.

Downtown Charleston

Downtown Charleston is the gateway to unlocking much of the city's history and pristine style. You can walk the cobblestone streets and take in the renown architecture of Rainbow Row or ride horse-drawn carriages and experience the French Quarters and Battery District. As you walk through much of the Battery you can also view the historic Civil War site, Fort Sumter.

Gullah Tours

This tour explores the Gullah language and culture native to the Charleston area. Your tour guide, Alphonso Brown, is a native of Rantowles, South Carolina, a rural community of Charleston, and is fluent in the Gullah language and familiar with many of the Gullah customs. This vibrant bus tour takes passengers on a crash course of Charleston's unique Gullah culture, it's African roots and the way the language and culture informs Charleston today.

Mcleod Plantation Historic Site

Established in 1851, McLeod Plantation has borne witness to some of the most significant periods of our nation’s history. Today McLeod Plantation Historic Site is an important 37-acre Gullah/Geechee heritage site that has been carefully preserved in recognition of its cultural and historical significance and tells an accurate history of slavery and the gruesome reality of life on a plantation.
